On the courts and in the streets, an entire culture is being built by hand: by coaches who stay, by the hearts of families that stand united, by players who keep showing up.

About Kibera

Kibera sits on the south-western edge of Nairobi and is home to hundreds of thousands of Kenyans. It is a working neighbourhood of small businesses, artists, coaches and families — a place with its own economy, music, fashion and sport. Open Your Eyes was filmed inside this world, with the community, not about it.

Basketball in Kenya

Basketball in Kenya is a grassroots movement. Public courts double as classrooms, mentorship spaces and safe rooms. In Kibera the sport has become one of the ways young people find structure, teammates and a version of themselves worth protecting. The film moves through that ecosystem — the coaches, the dawn practices, the neighbourhood rivalries — to show a Nairobi basketball scene rarely documented on screen.
